The New School News

Countdown to Liftoff

With The New School as their launch pad, the Class of 2013 is taking off for all kinds of new careers, projects, and journeys. Just ahead of the May 24 New School Commencement, The News caught up with a few soon-to-be-alumni to ask them: “What are you doing after graduation?”

Michael Skinner, MA Media Studies

I’m already doing it! I just started working for Vice Media, which does online content, advertising, TV and video, and publishes a magazine. I’m doing post-production editing for Web videos and learning a lot about what it takes to run an international media company.

Thi Wan, BFA Fashion Design/BFA in Communication Design

Right now I’m just focusing on finishing my thesis—theses, actually in BFA Communication Design and BFA Fashion Design . My fashion thesis is about creating a personal skin and about my vision of the future. I developed a biodegradable textile—it has its own lifespan. My communications thesis is still in progress, but it’s going to take the form of a portrait installation. I’m looking for employment now. I’m doing a lot of outside collaborations as part of my fashion thesis, and hopefully those will continue after I graduate.

Joe Hartley, BFA Jazz Performance

I’ve been touring and producing during my whole tenure at New School Jazz—and before I studied at The New School, actually—and I will continue to do so. This summer I’m going to tour with Ludacris, and play the Blue Note in Tokyo with R&B star Avant. On top of all that I’ll be working on a couple of studio projects with my production team.

Zeba Blay, BA Film Studies

I’m from Ghana originally and I’m planning on going back there to do some film work once I graduate. I’m a film critic and my sister’s a fashion designer—this summer we’ll be working on a fashion and film festival in Ghana. I’m also going to keep writing for Indiewire and Huffington Post and I’m thinking about graduate school, although I may need a break from school for a bit!
