Weekly Flashback, May 13-17
T-Minus 6 Days: remember, the tassel goes on the right. We know you have a laundry list of things to get done before graduation mania takes over campus. Catch up on the latest happenings.
This Time Next Week
The countdown for commencement is now in the single digits! In just seven days, 3,263 of you will join the ranks of our alumni. Congratulations, you did it! It is now appropriate to raise your fist in the air while keeping time to Simple Mind’s Don’t You. Or, for a more somber reflection, embrace friends and sway to Green Day’s Good Riddance. We’ll see you at Javits next Friday. Interested but can’t attend? We’ve still got you covered. Watch the event live here.
A Regular Gustavo
The Los Angeles Philharmonic might have superstar Gustavo Dudamel, but we’ve got a rising star of our own, and soon, he’s taking over Carnegie Hall…nearly. This week, Mannes’ Brian Petuch was selected by the New York Youth Symphony’s First Music Commission to compose a chamber ensemble. Petuch will premiere his composition at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall later in the year. Listen to some of his work here.
It’s Not All About the Clothes You Wear
On Thursday, the student-run organization Dress Practice celebrated the launching of their journal, BIAS. With a goal of combining aspects of design theory, fashion, and visual media, the publication hopes to initiate collaborations between students while showcasing original and inspiring work. This is no ordinary Vogue look-alike, either. The work sparks critical engagement with a number of different fields. Right now, the editors are calling for submissions to explore the topic of fashion and healing. Check it out.
New School Tops Another Ranking
The New York Times this week listed The New School as the most international university campus. The top ranking, which comes from U.S. News and World Report, is only one of many. We’ve also been noticed for our small class sizes, have one of the top five design schools, one of six best online programs for vets, plus more. Brush off your shoulders, New Schoolers; we rock. Check out President David Van Zandt’s tweet:
