Mannes Opera Director to Conduct at Glimmerglass Festival
The opera world has long been aware of the accomplishments of Joseph Colaneri. A veteran conductor, he’s been on the directing roster of the Metropolitan Opera for 15 years, conducted more than 60 performances with the New York City Opera, and is currently the artistic director for the West Australian Opera, and for our very own opera program at Mannes College the New School for Music. Now Colaneri can add one more position to his already impressive resume: Music Director of the Glimmerglass Festival, New York’s opera and musical theater company.
In a press release announcing the appointment (which begins October 1, 2013), the opera company said, “Joe’s many connections will help us identify new talent for our own productions and create opportunities for alumni of our Young Artists Program. Because this program is such a vital part of our company, I’m thrilled we were able to find a music director who has a great track record working with young people.”
Colaneri, who has directed the Mannes Opera since 1998, has a reputation for innovative productions that garner consistently positive reviews from audiences and media outlets alike. Most recently, he directed students in a production of The Rape of Lucretia, for which the New York Times bestowed a definite nod of approval.
