For over three years now, The New School has been anxiously anticipating the completion of one of its largest construction project to date: The University Center, a reflection of our growth and transition to a prestigious university for the arts, social sciences, and design. What’s inside the #NewUniversityCenter? Approximately 375,000 square feet of classrooms, dormitories, an auditorium, two-level library, cafeteria, and ample space for the entire student body. Take a look inside:
Dormitories: Just over 600 students currently call the upper eight floors of the University Center home, and have access to an additional, lower level equipped with a workout room, private studio space, practice rooms, and common lounge. The dorms have been occupied since the beginning of the term, and consist mostly of two, two-bed suites conjoined by a dining and living area.
Event Café: The main entrance overlooks one of the most versatile spaces in the University Center: The Event Café. Functioning as a meeting place, coffee kiosk, and student lounge, the café includes a stage area for informal performances. Stairs form a mini amphitheater directly above the Event Café, providing additional seating.
Communicating Stairs and “Skyquads”: Two grand staircases connect the first seven, academic floors of the new building. Designed to be bright, spacious, and engaging, the stairs create landing spaces—or skyquads—on the third, fourth, and fifth floors, for students and faculty to stop, talk, and mingle.
