Victoria Beckham @ The New School
On Monday, February 10, Victoria Beckham joined Simon Collins, dean of the School of Fashion at Parsons The New School for Design, in front of a sold-out crowd at the University Center’s John L. Tishman Auditorium. Fresh off of showing her 10th New York Fashion Week collection, Beckham spoke candidly about working in the field which had always been her passion. Over 850 students and New School community members listened as the former Spice Girl reflected on her time as a pop star, her early style influences, and what’s next for her career. The event was the first in an ongoing conversation series Dean Collins is organizing.Â
Beckham told the aspiring designers to work for other people before breaking out on their own. “Get out there. Be a sponge. Learn, enjoy it.” What’s equally important is “to surround yourself with the right people. I’m not doing this on my own. I have an incredible team of people who work really hard.” So what’s next for Posh? The designer mentioned her tastes are very much inspired by men’s tailoring, and that she’d like to tackle menswear in the future. Also on the docket, the regular Manolo Blahnik collaborator would love to do a shoe line. “If anybody here is a shoe designer, please do come and see me!” A potential pairing with a future Parsons grad? That’s certainly something to look out for!
