“My inspiration for the TEDC Scholars proposal was developed through my years advocating for renewable energy and energy efficiency in New York State, especially during the years following Hurricane Sandy,” said Marriele Robinson. “Post Sandy, government and first responders dependence on oil to fuel everything from emergency vehicles to warming stations was astounding. When considering the fuel crisis following Sandy left gas stations empty and homes unable to heat, it seemed counterintuitive that so much of disaster response was reliant on such an unreliable fuel source. By putting policies and programs into place that prioritize biofuel for disaster response initiatives, governments can rely on cheaper and more readily available fuel, especially when assistance services must be maintained long-term.”
