The University Center Wins Award for Excellence
The New School’s University Center has won the Urban Land Institute 2017–2018 Global Award for Excellence. The Urban Land Institute honors outstanding development projects in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors with the ULI Global Awards for Excellence program, which today is widely recognized as the development community’s most prestigious awards program.
The University Center is an example of designing our campus in a way that will take the university into the future. The building meets LEED Gold certification standards for its outstanding focus on sustainability, making it one of the greenest buildings in New York and one of the greenest academic buildings in the country. The University Center both supports our sustainability initiatives through its innovative design, and responds to the school’s increasing demand for state-of-the-art, interdisciplinary spaces.
“This recognition is a great honor. It parallels the generous reception the building has received from educational institutions far and wide, who have visited it and found its many innovations in support of interdisciplinary learning to be instructive for their own aspirations.” said Lia Gartner, Vice President of Buildings.
The University Center’s cutting-edge features include an advanced ventilation system, ice storage, sustainably sourced materials, greywater and blackwater treatment, cogeneration, and a technologically advanced lighting system.
“The Urban Land Institute Global Awards for Excellence program is a timely reminder of the key difference that responsible land use can make in terms of community longevity and sustainability,” said Patrick L. Phillips, CEO of The Urban Land Institute Global.
“Tackling climate change is among The New School’s top priorities,” said Erik Eibert, Assistant Director for Sustainable Initiatives, “and the University Center plays a big role in our efforts to reduce our energy consumption and carbon footprint.”
