Mike Harrington Selected as a 2019 Forefront Fellow by Urban Design Forum

Mike Harrington, MS Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management ‘18, Assistant Director at Tishman Environment and Design Center, was selected for the 2019 Forefront Fellowship Program for emerging leaders in urban design, development, and policy. Created by the Urban Design Forum, the program provides a setting for fellows to investigate how design can address a social or political issue facing New York City. Individuals selected for the Forefront Fellowship program represent a broad range of professions – scholars, activists, designers, architects, landscape architects, planners, developers, public officials, lawyers, and journalists – and share a commitment to building resilient cities around the world.

The 2019 fellowship, Turning the Heat, will explore how urban design can confront the climate risks facing vulnerable neighborhoods. During the initial phase of the program, fellows will partner with the Mayor’s Office of Resiliency to survey neighborhoods and buildings, and interview local and international stakeholders to produce research on mitigating heat. Later, fellows will work in independent teams to investigate broader environmental justice challenges facing neighborhoods in New York City.

The Urban Design Forum is an independent membership organization that promotes innovative solutions to urban challenges. For nearly 40 years, the Forum has brought together leaders in the field of urban design and planning through conferences, publications, and fellowships, to investigate creative approaches to urban challenges.
