School of Media Studies to Host 2019 National Student Production Awards

For the first time in its history, The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) is bringing its National Student Production Awards to New York City. This year’s broadcast will be hosted by the School of Media Studies at The New School and will take place on Friday, November 1, 2019, at 2pm EDT. The live-streamed awards show will be sponsored by students and faculty of the School of Media Studies.

“The School of Media Studies is excited to host this year’s National Student Production Awards,” said Vladan Nikolic, Dean of the School of Media Studies. “NATAS approached us because of The New School’s continuous commitment to academic excellence, progressive thinking, and creative expression, and we are thrilled to be part of this celebration of outstanding work by students who will soon be shaping the media world.”

The School of Media Studies’ student-run production group, Red Dog Productions, will be working alongside NATAS staff during the awards broadcast while Rafael Parra, associate professor of media studies and two-time Emmy Award winner, will be featured in the broadcast.

“It is a great opportunity for the School of Media Studies’ students to demonstrate their capabilities and professionalism in a live-streamed, nationally broadcast event as important as the National Students Production Awards,” Parra said. “Additionally, as a two-time Emmy Award winner, I am honored to be part of this year’s NATAS celebration.”

The students involved in helping produce the National Student Production Awards include Isaias Morales (MA Media Studies ’19) on livestream, Yigit Eygi (MA Sound Studies and Design ’20) on sound, and Isaiah Alexander (BA Musical Theater ’19) and Marshal Leonard (BA Media Studies ’20) on camera.

“Red Dog Productions student staff are thrilled to be able to work on a project that celebrates other student production work at this level,” said Macha Rose, producer of Red Dog Productions and 2018 alumna of the MA Media Studies program. “We look forward to the opportunity to work on set and learn about other projects junior filmmakers are working on.”

Nominees for this year’s National Student Production Awards were selected from high school student entries across the country in 24 programming and craft categories. This year’s submissions were successfully culled from over 2,000 entries from the regional chapters of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Entries were judged by selected industry professionals and media academics.

“The National Student Production Awards challenge students to be actively engaged in their education by real world experiences,” said Danielle Mannion, Education Chair, NATAS. “We are extremely grateful to the hundreds of industry professionals who judged and critiqued these exceptional student productions and look forward to an exciting event at The New School.”
