New School Faculty and Alumni Earn Prestigious Award Nominations and Recognitions

Every year, alumni, faculty, and the occasional student, are nominated for some of the biggest entertainment awards the music and film industries offer. This year is no exception, as members of The New School community have earned nominations for the 2023 Grammy Awards, Academy Awards, and GLAAD Media Awards.

Laura Poitras, BA Liberal Arts ‘96, directed “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” a documentary about the life of renowned photographer and activist Nan Goldin, which is nominated for Best Documentary at the 95th Academy Awards.

Luz Marina Zamora, MS Media Management and Documentary Studies ’17, served as the online editor and post supervisor for the short documentary “The Martha Mitchell Effect,” which is nominated for Best Documentary Short at the Academy Awards.

Jane Ira Bloom, Professor of Jazz and Contemporary Music in the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and Allison Miller, a faculty member in Jazz, are both nominated for a Grammy for Best Immersive Audio Album for “Picturing the Invisible” at the 65th Grammy Awards.

Robert Glasper, BFA Jazz ‘01, is nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Album and Best Engineered Album for Non-Classical for his album “Black Radio III.”

Valerie Coleman and Jessie Montgomery, faculty members at Mannes School of Music, are both nominated for a Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance for their work with the New York Youth Symphony.

The JACK Quartet, Mannes School of Music’s quartet in residence, recorded “Bermel: Intonations,” which is nominated for the Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition.

Arturo O’Farrill, a faculty member in the School of Jazz, is nominated for Best Latin Jazz Album for “Fandango at the Wall in New York.”

Linda May Han Oh, a faculty member in the School of Jazz, is nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for “New Standards Vol. 1.”

Finally, Ain’t No Mo, written by Drama alum Jordan Cooper and directed by Drama alum Stevie Walker-Webb, is nominated for a GLAAD Media Award in the Outstanding Broadway Production category.
