New School Faculty Awards and Honors

The New School Faculty are changing how we understand and interact with the world through their groundbreaking research and creative work. Recently, professors and faculty members from throughout The New School have been awarded for contributions to their fields with prestigious grants, fellowships, and more.

2024-2025 Faculty Achievements

Andrew Arato, Dorothy Hart Hirshon Professor in Political and Social Theory, received an honorary doctorate from Eötvös Loránd University.  

J. Mae Barizo, Assistant Professor of Writing, received an artist grant from the MAP Fund. 

Ben Barry, Dean of the School of Fashion, received the Changemaker Award from the Canadian Art & Fashion Awards. 

Jane Ira Bloom, Professor of Jazz, was selected as a winner in the 2025 Downbeat International Critics Poll for Soprano Sax, and is a recipient of the 2025 New Music USA Creator Fund

Patricia Brennan, Assistant Professor at the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, was awarded the Album of the Year and Vibraphonist of the Year in the 2025 Downbeat Critics Poll.

Quentin Bruneau, Associate Professor of Politics, was awarded the 2025 Francesco Guicciardini Prize for Best Book in Historical International Relations for his work States and the Masters of Capital.

Laura Maria Censabella, Assistant Professor at the School of Drama, was selected to the Playwrights’ Center’s 2025-2027 Venturous Play List.

Christen Clifford, Assistant Professor at Lang, received a Creative Catalyst Grant from the city of Newark, NJ, and a New York State Council on the Arts Support for Artists Grant. 

Anat Cohen, Assistant Professor at the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, was selected the 2025 Clarinetist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, and the winner in the clarinet category in Downbeat Magazine’s 73rd Annual Critics Poll.

Sylvie Courvoisier, Lecturer at the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, received a 2025 music award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a 2025 Swiss Grand Award for Music

Sandipto Dasgupta, Assistant Professor of Politics, was awarded the Francine Frankel Award for Best Book on South Asian Politics by the American Political Science Association.  

Heather Davis, Assistant Professor and Director of Culture and Media, is the recipient of a 2024 Andy Warhol Arts Writers Grant.

James Dodd, Werner Marx Professor in Phenomenology and Professor of Philosophy, received the Edward Goodwin Ballard Prize in Phenomenology for best book from the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy.     

Dave Douglas, Assistant Professor at Mannes, was honored by the New York State Senate for Jazz Appreciation Month, and received the Silver Award in the Jazz/Improvised Music category from the International Trumpet Guild’s 2025 ITG Recording Awards.

Amanda Ekery, Associate Director of Academic Affairs in the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, received a Creation Fund Award from the National Performance Network, and a Phoebe Jacobs Prize from the ASCAP Foundation. 

Christine Facella, Director of MFA Industrial Design and Assistant Professor of Product and Industrial Design, is among twenty-five recipients of the Architectural League of New York and The New York State Council on the Arts 2024 Independent Projects Grant. 

Mark Gardner, Associate Professor of Architectural Practice and Society, received the Van Alen Institute’s Torchbearer Award

Teresa Ghilarducci, Irene and Bernard L. Schwartz Professor of Economics and Policy Analysis, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Labor and Employment Relations Association.     

Mary Halvorson, Assistant Professor at the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, was awarded Guitarist of the Year, in the 2025 in the 2025 Downbeat Critics Poll.

Joseph Heathcott, Professor of Urban Studies, received a Residency Fellowship from the Bogliasco Center. 

Rebekah Heller, Assistant Professor at Mannes, is the winner of the 2025 Marineau Opera Grant for Women Conductors by Opera America.

Jermaine Hill, Dean of the School of Drama, received a nomination from the Equity Jeff Award for Music Direction for The Color Purple.

Ingrid Laubrock, Lecturer at Mannes, was awarded Rising Star Composer and Rising Star Large Ensemble in the 2025 Downbeat Critics Poll.

David T. Little, Assistant Professor at Mannes, received the Music Critics Association of North America’s 2025 award for Best New Opera

Kirstin Munro, Assistant Professor of Economics, was a Fellow at the New Institute Foundation, Hamburg, Germany, in the Beyond Capitalism research group.          

Azure D. Osborne-Lee, Lecturer at the School of Drama, was selected to the Playwrights’ Center’s 2025-2027 Venturous Play List, Disability Belong’s Virtual Entertainment Lab Fellow, GLAAD’s Black Queer Creative Summit Cohort, and the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in Playwriting/Screenwriting.

YuJune Park, Associate Professor of Communication Design, and Caspar Lam, Assistant Professor of Communication Design, with support from Erin Dowding, MA History of Design and Curatorial Studies ’24, are nominated for a Webby People’s Voice Award for The Tremaine Collection.

Michele Rosewoman, Lecturer at the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, received a 2025 Mellon Foundation Jazz Legacies Fellowship

Mark Setterfield, Leo Model Professor of Economics, received the Keynes Gesellschaft (German Keynes Society) 2025 prize for best scientific work.

Glenn Shrum, Associate Professor of Lighting Design and Interdisciplinary Practice, received a Lifetime wasLifetime Achievement Award from the EdisonReport. 

Jonathan Square, Assistant Professor of Black Visual Culture, serves on the advisory committee for the Met’s 2025 Costume Institute exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.

Richard The, Program Director of MS Data Visualization and Assistant Professor of Interaction Design, has been inducted into the Alliance Graphique Internationale

Matthew Villareal, Assistant Professor of Art, Design, and Social Justice and Assistant Dean for Art and Design Education, was selected as a fellow to 2025 cohort of the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures Leadership Institute.

Immanuel Wilkins, Lecturer at the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, was awarded Alto Saxophonist of the Year and Rising Star Artist, 2025 in the 2025 Downbeat Critics Poll.

Terry Williams, Professor of Sociology, received the ESS Merit Award from the Eastern Sociological Society and a 2024-2025 New York City Book Award from The New York Society Library. 

Reginald Workman, Professor of Jazz, was selected to the 2025 Jazz Legacies Fellowship by the Jazz Foundation of America.
