Dance Therapy Pioneer Elissa White Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
Elissa White, faculty member in Certificate Program in Creative Arts Therapy at The New School for General Studies, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the 2010 American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) on September 25.
“Elissa is an internationally known dance therapy pioneer, and we are delighted to honor her and thank her for gracing the lives of so many of our Creative Arts Therapy students over the years,” said Louise Montello, associate professor and coordinator of the program.
White has been teaching at The New School since the mid-nineties. She was also a cofounder of ADTA in l964, an editor of the American Journal of Dance Therapy, and cofounder of the Hunter College dance therapy master’s program.
Over the years, White has taught countless students about nonverbal communication, group process, and the dance therapy profession and has published numerous articles on these subjects. Her latest work includes Laban’s Movement Theories: A Dance Therapist’s Perspective,, published in 2009 in The Art and Science of Dance/Movement Therapy: Life is Dance.
