New School Jazz’s Bobby Sanabria Performs with Band Quinteto Okobio

Award-winning composer, percussionist, educator, and band leader Bobby Sanabria leads his explosive band Quinteto Okobio on Wednesday, November 3, at 8:00 p.m. This performance concludes The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music’s Fall 2010 Jazz Presents series. Okobio, is the Efik/Abaku√° word for fraternity, brotherhood, and earth. The quintet takes jazz and Latin fusion to new heights with Leo Traversa (electric bass), Enrique Haneine (piano), Peter Brainin (tenor and soprano sax), and Jean Caze (trumpet). Alumni John Beaty (alto saxophone) and Joe Beaty (trombone) make guest appearances.

New School Jazz faculty member Sanabria has led and played on many acclaimed recordings, performing with such legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, and Mario Bauza (the godfather of Afro-Cuban jazz). Jazz Presents partners outstanding faculty with affiliated artists, alumni, and/or students of New School Jazz. The series is funded in part by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.

The performance takes place in the Jazz Performance Space, 55 West 13th Street, 5th floor. Admission is $10 and free to seniors and New School student, faculty, staff, and alumni with valid ID.
