Vice President of Social Justice Maya Wiley Talks Health Care, French Elections on ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’
Maya Wiley — civil rights activist, former counsel to the Mayor of New York City and vice president of social justice at The New School — joined a panel on “Real Time with Bill Maher” recently to talk health care, the Trump presidency, and the French presidential elections.
On the House of Representative’s recent passage of the American Health Care Act, Wiley reminded Maher that while 217 GOP representatives voted to pass the ACHA, every single Democrat and many moderate Republicans voted against it — a reflection of many Americans’ concerns about changes to their health care under the bill.
“We are not all on the same page and we don’t all agree, but one thing you have to remember is that 20 Republican voted against this bill,” she said. “It was the strategy of the House Republican leadership who were trying to knit this bill together to get the Freedom Caucus to vote for it. Thanks to gerrymandering they have undue influence in the states their representing. So you have to remember the passage of this bill is not actually a reflection of the demands of many constituents, particularly as we go into 2018 elections.”
