New School Student and Faculty Achievements Include Fulbright Awards and National Endowment for the Humanities Grants
Students and faculty members from throughout The New School continue to have their academic and research acknowledged through prestigious grant and scholarship programs. Their work has been recognized by the Fulbright Program, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the German Academic Exchange Service.
Fulbright U.S. Student Program
Brianna Corley, MFA Creative Writing ’24, and Connor Smith, a PhD Politics student, have been selected for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Corley received an English Teaching Award and will be stationed in Norway; Smith received an Open Study/Research Award to work in Slovenia. Corley and Smith are part of a long line of New School Fulbright awardees—the university has produced recipients every year since 1991.
The highly competitive Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers unparalleled opportunities for cultural and academic exchange to outstanding graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from all backgrounds. Program participants pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad. Fulbright Award recipients meet, work, live with, and learn from the people of the host country.
U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
Five New School students were selected for the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, which provides opportunities for study and internship abroad for students currently receiving federal Pell Grants. The scholarship provides funds for the students to engage in study abroad programs run by their university or other institutions.
Alexandra Acosta, an Anthropology student at Eugene Lang College, received support to study in the Ancient + Modern Japan program at CIEE Kyoto’s study abroad program.
Nicole Bartinowski, a Photography student at Parsons, participated in a program through SAI at the Paris College of Art.
Tiffany Chung, an Interior Design student at Parsons, studied at the University Arts London through the API study abroad program.
Foster Johnson-Lewis, an Illustration student at Parsons, took part in a Japanese Studies program through CIEE.
Anabella Orellana, a Product Design student at Parsons, studied at the University of Sydney’s Sydney College of Arts through The New School’s exchange program.
National Endowment for the Humanities
Nicolas Langlitz, a professor of anthropology, and Natalia Mehlman Petrzela, an associate professor of history, received grants from the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) during its most recent round of funding. The NEH sponsors vital humanities education, research, preservation, and public programs, supporting projects that “contribute to our greater understanding of the human endeavor and add to our nation’s wealth of educational and cultural resources,” said NEH Chair Shelly C. Lowe in a press release.
Langlitz received a Collaborative Research grant, which he will use to support Psychedelic Humanities: Bridging the Two Cultures, a two-day conference on the emerging field of psychedelic humanities. Mehlman-Petrzela received a Public Scholars award to support research for and writing of A Thinking American’s Guide to the Classroom Culture Wars, a book on the history of conflicts over public education and public school policy in the United States.
Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) Scholarships
Julia Ballester, a PhD Sociology student, is the recipient of a scholarship from the prestigious Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, or German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the largest German organization in the field of international academic cooperation. The scholarships support the studies and research of graduates, doctoral students, and postdocs at universities and research institutions in Germany.
