Mural Nomad – Tiphanie Dragaut and Benjamin Hochard

On Friday, April 12th, our Art and Textiles class welcomed curators Tiphanie Dragaut and Benjamin Hochard to their classroom for a presentation and discussion on Mural Nomad, a group exhibition around contemporary tapestry and woven art.

Dragaut began the presentation explaining the importance of Le Corbusier’s tapestry work in the creation of the exhibition as a whole, highlighting how the exhibition addresses different issues in relation to how the artist works and experiences their time in a given space. Dragaut claims in relation to Le Corbusier’s La Femme et Le MarĂ©chal Ferrant, 1987-1988, that we have all become nomads, thus making the exhibition relatable to all audiences. Dragaut continuously stressed that tapestries are a process, and they need the audience to be activated. Next, Dragaut took the class through several slides which provided examples of the works seen within the exhibition.

For the second presentation, Hochard presented his work specifically for Mural Nomad, explaining the weaving process, his colour theories, and providing explanations on his personal “textile families,” as he called them – which were all different sets of tapestries, installations or woven works with specific names, grouped.

After their presentation, students were given the opportunity to ask both Dragaut and Hochard about their opinions on the show, and secondary questions about the works shown within the exhibition and their presentation.

Overall, students left the class extremely inspired by Mural Nomad and eager to use this inspiration towards developing critical angles on their own final papers.
