Parsons Paris

no clear signs

Nile Giraud (BFA Fashion Design) shares the concept and project she created in her Spring 2019 Photography course.

In order to depict the protest culture in Paris and its ideologies that are rooted in May 1968, I photographed the ongoing protests of the Gillet Jaune in Paris.

In May 68, students from la Sorbonne protested an unjust social system and workers rights.  It was a movement that shifted the French ideology and is looked back upon regularly in France.

The ideas of the yellow vests are in line with these ideas, though with the influence of social media, is pursued in a vastly different manner. With social media being the platform of organization for these weekly protests, there is not one single leader, nor one single idea.

This shows the immediacy that occurs from these platforms and their power. However one may argue, the movement itself loses its significance and becomes presumably vague.

The parallels of 1968 and today are evident, these parallels are what I tried to signify within the images. Taken on a Kodak 35mm  I have tried to understand a culture through the political stand view of its citizens, comparing these photographs with Bruno Barbey’s documentation of the 1968 protests, that is shared through Magnum photos.
