Career Services: Resume and Company Night

This past Wednesday, we held our very first Resume Night! Two professional recruiters as well as Emily and Allison from the Student Success Team were able to provide one on one feedback to 20 students about their resume. Students were happy to show their resume (in English & French) and asked for tips for their future applications in France.

Here are some general tips:

  • sell yourself and highlight important information
  • make your resume one page length and include a picture
  • add one line of self description
  • be clear and straight to the point by adding a line such as “Looking for a Summer Internship in Paris / Graphic Designer”
  • try to value your experience, from the beginning to the end
  • feel free to be creative on your resume (but make sure it is readable e.g. same font)
  • www.canva.fr is the website you will find creative templates
  • make sure your CV is saved under a PDF.

Juniors, Seniors, SDM, and Graduate students had the opportunity to talk to three companies about their hiring process. The three companies where LVMH Fragrance Brands, CHLOE, and ACCOR/Creative Studio.

Students were provided information about:

  • What to put on their resume to make them stand out
  • The hiring process and types of internships available
  • The importance of knowing the company’s history and DNA before any application/interview

The companies advised students to:

  • Highlight experience
  • Make their resume understandable for someone that may not have a technical/design background

Advertisements for jobs are usually posted 4 months in advance on the following platforms: company website, JobTeaser, Richemont group, Linkedin and FashionJobs.

Here are some tips for your cover letter, portfolio, and interview!

Tips for the Cover Letter

  • personalize it (add details about the company you’re applying for, motivation, vision and skills) and structure it (1 paragraph = 1 idea)
  • don’t do too much and avoid careless mistakes

Tips for the portfolio

  • brainstorming a story-line or arrangement (what the studio wants to see)
  • come up with an organizing principle
  • write an explanation to show how you want to organize your work
  • showcase your strongest ideas
  • pick out a selection of pieces that show your development in each of your projects
  • show the most recent include the old one to show progress

Your cover letter and resume/CV show your hard skills while the interview reveals your soft skills.

Tips for the interview

  • practice, practice, and practice: reveal your soft skills,
  • think about the key elements of your application
  • be straightforward
  • keep calm and smile
  • answer questions about the commercial side of the brand
  • some talking points to include in your interview are: your favorite look from past collection, your thoughts about their last campaign, the job setting/organization, and novelties.

Students and faculty members could also have a LinkedIn headshot taken, thanks to Joseph Anderson an AMT Freshman . Many people took advantage of this and received two to three headshots to use for their resume, website, and LinkedIn!

The event was a success and along with their free Parsons Paris mug and notebook, students were able to better understand the hiring process as well as gain essential application materials such as the resume and headshot. We are looking forward to next semester’s Career Night!
