An Experimental Approach to Technique in Junior Specialized Studio
In the Junior year, Specialized Studio allows fashion design students to explore technique as a creative tool to create a distinct and clearly identifiable design language. Each student examines how a simple technique (in this case gathering of fabric) can be distorted, manipulated and reimagined to find unique answers to fit, construction, texture and volume. Despite the confinement constraints faced by the students, they were all able to complete their project using simple cotton muslin. Those in confinement with their families could make the most of their local neighbourhood landscapes or back gardens to document their outcomes. The studio course is taught by lecturer and contemporary tailor Max Thomas Sanderson.
