Honoring International Day of Persons with Disabilities
A message from: Lorenley Báez, Associate Provost for Equity & Belonging
Office of Equity & Belonging
Dear Students,
Today, Wednesday, December 3rd, The New School recognizes and celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This day raises awareness of the political, social, economic, and cultural challenges faced by persons with disabilities while emphasizing the importance of inclusivity, accessibility, and equal opportunities. It also honors the achievements and contributions of individuals with disabilities within our communities.
Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1992, International Day of Persons with Disabilities also commemorates the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 2006. In 2022, President Joe Biden officially proclaimed the third of December as International Day of Persons with Disabilities in the United States. This observance serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create opportunities for those with disabilities so that they can thrive and succeed.
As we reflect and celebrate this day and wonderful community, I welcome any New School student seeking support or resources to connect with Student Disability Services by emailing or calling 212.229.5626.
I look forward to celebrating this important day with you!
