Faculty In Residence 2025-2026

Katayoun Chamany

Katayoun Chamany is the Mohn Family Professor of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and Professor of Biology in the Interdisciplinary Science program of Eugene Lang College and the Director of the Academic Science Labs at The New School.  Trained as a geneticist and cell biologist, she uses a STREAMD framework (STEM + Arts + Design + Responsibility) combined with visual thinking strategies, case study learning, and the flipped classroom format to promote inclusive learning environments. Utilizing critical pedagogy, she demonstrates how scientific literacy can lead to positive social change across a range of topics delivered in undergraduate and graduate courses, labs, collabs, and in a summer bridge course for the Higher Education Opportunity Program. As a Leadership Fellow for Science for New Civic Engagements and Social Responsibilities (SENCER), she has designed interdisciplinary educational materials in collaboration with colleagues in the humanities, social sciences, policy, and design. She is a member of the Faculty for the 21st Century of Project Kaleidoscope, a national organization focused on undergraduate science education reform and has served as a reviewer and member of editorial boards of the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science and the CBE-Life Sciences Education journal. She has hosted numerous faculty development workshops in the areas of classroom management, curriculum development, and authentic assessment.  For these efforts, she has received the New School Distinguished University Teaching Award and University Social Justice Teaching Award, the Eugene Lang College Excellence In Faculty Advising Award, the William E. Bennett Award for Extraordinary Accomplishments in Citizen Science from SENCER, and the John A. Moore Award for Science as a Way of Knowing from the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology.  She received her Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley in 1996.

Wendy D’Andrea

Dr. Wendy D’Andrea is a clinical psychologist with expertise in trauma,
psychobiology, and healing. After completing degrees at Oberlin College and the University of Michigan, and postdoctoral specialty training in trauma treatment, she joined the New School for Social Research and Lang College in 2010. Since joining the New School, she has taught classes on psychopathology, trauma, research methods, and treatment, and her lab has become a vibrant working collective producing over 50 publications with student collaboration. She is also a thought leader in the field of trauma, leading forward the integration of science and practice, and brings a strong interest in understanding processes like embodiment, interpersonal connection, and self-expression in venues such as theater, dance, sport, humanitarian work, and therapy. As Wendy takes up the Faculty-in-Residence position, she will be joined by her family: partner Alex, and children, Nina and Julia.

Harpreet Sareen

Harpreet Sareen is an Associate Professor of Interaction and Media Design at Parsons School of Design who pursues a philosophical reimagining of natural worlds and how our technological inventions can be recontextualized through what he calls “Convergent Design.” His research creates hybrid materials that combine living organisms with electronic systems—plants that can sense environmental changes and communicate with computer systems, or biological materials that help create more sustainable technologies. Receiving his PhD in Information Studies from the University of Tokyo and S.M. in Media Arts and Sciences from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harpreet’s global journey spans the MIT Media Lab, Google Creative Lab, Microsoft Research, and institutions in Austria, India, Japan, France, and Singapore. His innovative work has earned recognition as an MIT Technology Review Under 35 Innovator and awards including the CHI Golden Mouse and Edison Gold. A Berggruen Institute and INK Fellow alumnus, Harpreet’s work bridges academic conferences and art exhibitions at venues like Ars Electronica Festival and Somerset House. He has advised plant science startups and has consulted for government offices including Abu Dhabi’s Executive Office. As Faculty in Residence, Harpreet’s research invites the community to reimagine how we might cultivate new relationships between technology, nature, and human experience.
