Student Health Services at The New School

Dear Students,
I hope you’re all adjusting well to the start of the fall semester. At Student Health Services (SHS), we provide medical, psychological, and wellness support services to students year-round. We approach our work from a holistic lens, providing comprehensive care and supporting you to advocate for your own and the community’s well-being.
We’re writing today to make sure you’re aware of the resources the university offers to support your health and well-being. All students are eligible for all services at SHS, no matter the insurance plan. SHS visits are free.

Medical Services
- Students can schedule in-person or telehealth appointments on the SHS Portal.
- Same-day and next-day appointments for urgent medical concerns are also available on the SHS Portal.
- Primary care
- Reproductive healthcare and medication abortion
- Gender-affirming healthcare
- Smoking/vaping cessation

Mental Health Services
- Individual counseling and support groups are offered in person and remotely via telehealth.
- Students can schedule an initial meeting with a counselor through the SHS Portal.
- A range of free counseling groups for students start the week of September 29th. These groups meet weekly and provide a supportive space to address various topics, including family dynamics, grief, mindfulness, and support for international students. The support group times, descriptions, and registration can be found here.
- If needed, students receiving individual counseling may also meet with a psychiatrist.
- Individual Mindfulness Sessions can help students learn skills to regulate emotions and be present in the moment. Schedule sessions through the SHS Portal.
- Check out Togetherall: an anonymous online community promoting a sense of belonging and connection.
- Students can seek support from counselors for urgent matters during in-person walk-in appointments Monday through Friday between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. Please arrive no later than 2:45 p.m.
Wellness Resources
Wellness and Health Promotion (WHP) is the primary prevention branch of SHS, working collaboratively to foster a culture of wellness throughout the university. The director meets with students one-on-one, runs the Peer Health Advocacy program, develops multidisciplinary partnerships & innovative workshops, and provides group-level interactive programs. These programs cover a variety of health, wellness, and safety topics, such as:
- stress reduction
- auricular acupuncture and acupressure
- menstrual product access (check out this campus map of free menstrual products)
- body positivity
- sexual health
- sex positivity
- sexual & interpersonal violence prevention
- HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections and diseases (STI/STDs)
- harm reduction, including overdose prevention with dispensing of naloxone, fentanyl and xylazine testing strips
- tobacco cessation

Free Flu Vaccine
Students are able to receive a free flu vaccine at SHS. To schedule an appointment, go to the SHS portal or call 212 229 1671.
Covid Vaccine
Updated Covid vaccines are now available at local pharmacies like Walgreens or CVS for students who meet the eligibility guidelines. If you qualify for a Covid vaccine and if it has been more than three months since your last Covid vaccine or Covid infection, now is a great time to get immunized. Vaccines are free with most insurance plans.
Book a Telehealth Booth
Students can book private booths for remote doctor visits, health consults, therapist sessions, and other online medical appointments. These booths are located on the 2nd floor of 39 West 13th Street. Reservations can be made using this link.
LGBTQ+ Resources
Please visit the LGBTQ+ Resources page, which outlines policies, information, activities, and support systems for students, faculty, and staff across the university who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, and gender expansive (LGBTQIAGE).
Student Health Insurance Plan Information and Resources
Students on the university’s health plan can create an online account on the Aetna Student Healthsite to find local in-network providers and obtain their health insurance card. The final deadline for students with their own health insurance to submit an online waiver form is September 30. Waivers that are submitted in fall 2025 will automatically roll over to the spring.
