Honoring First-Generation College Students

A message from: Lorenley Báez, Associate Provost for Equity & Belonging

‌Office of Equity and Belonging

Dear New School Community,

Today, November 8th, The New School is proud to join colleges and universities across the country for FirstGen Forward’s National First-Generation College Celebration. Every year, institutions come together to celebrate their first-generation college students in honor of the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

‌Through our New School Firsts program, we are dedicated to fostering a strong sense of belonging for all first-generation students at The New School. We honor the inspiring students, staff, faculty, and alumni who were the first in their families to pursue a four-year undergraduate degree, a graduate degree, or the first degree within the United States.

In 2019, New School Firsts was created to support first-generation students through the values of pride, resourcefulness, adaptability, persistence, and independence in order to help New Schoolers flourish in college.

To celebrate our first-generation community, the Office of Equity and Belonging invites you to the Second Annual First Gen Mixer on Monday, November 11th, at 1:00 PM in the Student Hub (39 West 13th Street, 2nd Floor). Join us for refreshments, appetizers, and free New School swag!

I look forward to celebrating this community with you!
