Transregional Center for Democratic Studies

Global Dialogues Fellowship Spring 2019 Call For Applications

Call For Applications: Global Dialogues Fellowships, Spring 2019

A Semester-Long Research Program in Critical Concerns of Democratic Culture & Governance

Public Space, Media and Democratic Discourse

In the Spring of 2019, the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies will be hosting the third cohort of four visiting scholars from Eurasia working in close collaboration with four graduate students from NSSR.  Together, the eight Global Dialogues Fellows, along with faculty advisors, will form an intensive, semester-long research group focusing on dimensions of democratic ideas and practice that often escape the attention of theorists. In the course of the semester each Fellow should be able to develop or fine-tune a specific project to become an element of her/his dissertation project, and ideally a publishable article. Final works will be presented in a concluding conference at the end of the semester.

The Subject

Those who consider applying for a Global Dialogues Fellowship this year, should be interested in advancing their work on a cluster of issues concerned with Democratic Discourses, the Public Sphere, and Media. Among the key advisors working with the Fellows will be faculty members of the New School for Social Research, from the departments of Sociology, Media Studies, History, Politics, and Anthropology. This year’s cohort of Fellows will be engaged in the activities of the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies, and will be working closely with Public Seminar, the New School’s web-based initiative for analysis, critique and debate.

Selection of Global Dialogues Fellows

International Applicants should be advanced MA or PhD students from the countries of Eurasia (Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, Belarus).  New School Applicants should be advanced MA or PhD students at NSSR.  All applicants should be committed to linking their academic work with responsibility vis‑à‑vis their respective societies. Since the key objective of the fellowship is to share and discuss locally produced insights, both conceptual and informed by citizens’ actions, we are looking for teamwork-oriented junior scholars wanting to advance their work in close collaboration with others. Since this fellowship builds on the shared academic experience at the annual Democracy & Diversity Summer Institutes in Wroclaw, and since its international contingent will be constituted by alumni of the Institute, New School alumni of D&D are particularly welcome. New School Global Dialogues Fellow’s will receive a stipend for the Spring 2019 semester, and International Fellows will be awarded a monthly stipend, living expenses (Rent/Utilities), and travel costs to and from New York.

Application Deadline:

For all New School Applicants the deadline is November 16th, 2018
