Reflections on “Millennials Rising: What’s Next for Sustainability?”

Millennials are embracing social practice in business. In today’s economy, sustainability takes center stage, but goes far beyond producing financial return. Equitable business practices serve the larger good, providing  economic, environmental, and social gains.

Eight members of The New School’s Social Innovation Alliance attended Columbia Business School’s Social Enterprise Conference this past Friday, October 31, 2014. Keynote addresses were given by Alicia Glen, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development in NYC, and Al Gore, former Vice President of the US.

This conference adds to The New School’s Social Innovation Alliance’s discourse on the changing mindset of doing good in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors.

The New School’s Social Innovation Alliance Members Reflections:

“The panels were so enlightening, a great opportunity to interact directly from the people who are driving change in the industry we are all so passionate about. I’m excited to continue with the conversations we started on Friday.” – Haldey Cooper (Non-profit Management, Milano)

“I enjoyed seeing that market investments in social companies are making it to the mainstream in NYC, from small firms & startups to big corporates, like Morgan Stanley. That for sure tells a trend for other places in the world.” – Ricardo Dutra Goncalves (Transdisciplinary Design, Parsons)

“I think what the conference highlighted to me was the unique mindset that the New School communicates daily. For example, our ideas regarding the democratization of wealth, the immediate need for social justice, and the innovative altruism that can exist in the corporate world are concepts our students grapple with daily. For us, it’s second nature. For other institutions and individuals, these ideas are unfamilar. They appear to only be at the tip of the iceberg.” – Amanda Hill (Non-profit Management, Milano)
