New School in the Community

New York City Council Member Carlina Rivera Presents The New School with Centennial Proclamation

On December 12, Carlina Rivera, New York City Council District 2, visited The New School to present the university with a proclamation from the New York City Council honoring 100 years of groundbreaking scholarship, bold creativity, and world-changing ideas. Citing The New School’s creation and development as “a new kind of academic institution where faculty and students would be free to address honestly and directly the challenges of the 20th century,” the proclamation was signed by Rivera; City Council Speaker Corey Johnson; Inez Barron, Chair, Committee on Higher Education; and Mark Treyger, Chair, Committee on Education.

Prior to presenting the proclamation, Rivera joined New School President David Van Zandt for a tour of the campus led by a student tour guide from the university’s Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts. Rivera visited the landmark 66 West 12th Street building, Parsons Making Center, Sheila C. Johnson Design Center, and art installations by Glen Ligon and Agnes Denes in the University Center.

Rivera, who represents the 2nd Council District – East Village, Flatiron, Gramercy Park, Rose Hill, Kips Bay, Murray Hill, and the Lower East Side – was inspired by The New School’s rich history and impact in the local community. Earlier this year, The New School also received a proclamation presented by New York State Senator Brad Hoylman in honor of the Centennial, along with a letter of congratulations from New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio.

The New School will continue to celebrate its 100th anniversary throughout the 2019-2020 academic year.
