Janey Program in Latin American Studies

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28TH // CORRUPTION AND POLITICS IN BRAZIL // LEONARDO AVRITZER

The Janey Program in Latin American Studies invites you for a talk with the leading Brazilian scholar Leonardo Avritzer.

CORRUPTION AND POLITICS IN BRAZIL

Brazil is facing a challenging moment. Its process of democratic construction, that was considered successful by most political and academic criteria, is undergoing the test of an impeachment and a non-elected government with a conservative and anti-rights agenda. These elements are related to an anti-corruption probe, Lava Jato (Car Wash), that some consider a breakthrough and others consider a biased political investigation against the Workers’ Party (the party of the ousted president Rousseff). The lecture will shed light on the core issues concerning the probe, campaign funding and the increased power of the judiciary.

Leonardo Avritzer is a professor at the Department of Political Science of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil, and Senior Scholar for the state-run National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPQ).  Professor Avritzer has published extensively on civil society and participation in Brazil. He is the author of many books among them “A Moralidade da Democracia” (The Morality of Democracy) which received the award of best book of the year in the Brazilian Social Sciences. He has published papers in several journals, among them Comparative Politics, Latin America Research Review, International Journal of Regional and Urban Research, Journal of Public Deliberation and Revista Dados. He has published two books in English “Democracy and the Public Space in Latin America” and “Participatory Institutions in Democratic Brazil”. He was the president of the Brazilian Political Science Association (2012-2016).
