2016/2017 Janey Annual Workshop: Frederico Menino Bindi de Oliveira – March 06
Frederico Menino Bindi de Oliveira will present his ongoing work “Neoliberalism and Internationalization in Brazilian Higher Education — Insights from international students and scholars in the United States“. Douglas de Toledo Piza will be commenting.
The Janey Workshop will take place at 80 5th Ave, Room G 529.
Abstract: This article explores the interrelations between neoliberalism and internationalization, and how this interplay has impacted higher education policy in Brazil since the 1990s. After reviewing part of the transformations occurred in the past two and a half decades, the article provides an exploratory analysis of ethnographic research and in-depth interviews conducted with Brazilian students and scholars in the United States. Based on this introductory evidence, it is suggested that the increased international mobility of Brazilian academics has played an important role in the internalization and normalization of neoliberal reforms implemented in Brazil since the country’s re-democratization.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
