Prof. Elías José Palti, Universidad de Quilmes / Conicet-Argentina
Wednesday, April 3, 6pm
The New School, Orozco Room, 66 West 12th Street, 7th Floor
Professor Palti is one of the most innovative and prolific writers on the intellectual history of Latin America. The depth of the knowledge of the political, literary, and cultural history of Central and South America that he has brought to his researches has been largely responsible for reshaping the debate about not only the political development of the region but the evolution of the very terms, such as democracy, that are used in the debate.
Prof. Palti has published several articles and written ten very influential monographs, among them Giro Lingüístico e Historia Intellectual (Buenos Aires: Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, 1998), Aporías, Tiempo, Modernidad, Historia, Sujeto, Nación, Ley (Buenos Aires: Alianza, 2001), La Invención de una Legitimidad. Razón y Retórica en el Pensamiento Mexicano del Siglo XIX (Un Estudio Sobre las Formas del Discurso Político) (México: Fondo de Cultura Económica, 2005), El Tiempo de la Política. El Siglo XIX Reconsiderado (Buenos Aires & Mexico, 2007), and El Momento Romántico. Nación, Historia y Lenguajes Políticos en la Argentina del Siglo XIX (Buenos Aires, 2009). Several of his works have become standard texts in university-level courses. He is also one of the founders of the journal Prismas.
