Avery Gordon will give a talk entitled “Letters from The Utopian Margins: The Hawthorne Archive”.The Hawthorne Archive represents voices from the utopian margins, where fact, fiction, theory, and image converge. It is a fugitive space for the development of a political consciousness of being, indifferent to the deadly forms of power that characterize our society.
Avery Gordon is Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara and Visiting Faculty Fellow at the Centre for Research Architecture, Department of Visual Cultures, Goldsmiths College, University of London. In 2012, she was the Anna Maria Kellen Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin where she worked on a collaborative project with Ines Schaber exhibited at dOCUMENTA (13). Professor Gordon is the author of Keeping Good Time: Reflections on Knowledge, Power and People and Ghostly Matters: Haunting and the Sociological Imagination, among other books and articles. Her work focuses on radical thought in action. Over the last few years she has been writing about captivity, war, and other forms of dispossession and how to eliminate them.
Letters from The Utopian Margins: The Hawthorne Archive will take place on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 from 12:30-2pm in the Alumni Reading Room, Pratt Institute Library.
