MAD News: The graphic language of punk, jewelry’s plastic and pixelated aesthetic, and more

 

Explore the explosive visual language that emerged from punk’s powerful subculture. On view on two floors, the exhibition brings together hundreds of punk’s most memorable graphics—from the shocking remixes of expropriated images and texts to the DIY zines and flyers that challenged the commercial slickness of the mainstream media.

April 8–13, a benefit exhibition and sale of contemporary jewelry from 55 emerging and acclaimed international jewelry artists from 18 countries—nearly all of whom will be in the Museum to talk to visitors and share their creations. With a diverse range of jewelry that encompasses an array of materials, inspirations, and techniques, there will be something for everyone to collect and enjoy.

Non-Stick Nostalgia: Y2K Retrofuturism in Contemporary Jewelry is one of the first exhibitions to focus on the work of artists and designers who came of age in the new millennium. Join us April 11 for a Jewelry of Tomorrow symposium with the featured international jewelry-makers.

April 4, join AIGA-NY and MAD for a discussion with Jon Key of the Brooklyn-based design studio Morcos Key on design as a means to amplify and empower communities, particularly queer and trans communities of color. From editorial to branding, Key investigates strategies for facilitating community building and making marginalized voices visible.

April 11, MAD Artist-in-Residence Tamara Santibañez leads an evening of zine-making. Participants will produce their own booklets by cutting, ripping, and pasting found texts and visuals, and inserting writings, drawings, and images. This event is free with pay-what-you-wish admission.
