The 2019 Nation Student Journalism Conference at The New School
The New School is partnering with The Nation to host their annual student journalism conference at The New School on Friday, May 31.
Coverage of social movements and protest is always essential–especially now, more than two years into the Trump administration. Yet, nuanced understanding of what leads people to participate in movements is often obscured by personality-driven or sensationalized narratives. Through rigorous reporting, historical context, and a sense of mission, the journalists at The Nation provide a model for informed coverage of the social movements that are shaping our country and the world.
This May, building on three successful previous conferences, The Nation is bringing together the next generation of independent journalists in an intimate setting to learn more about social movements and how journalists can better cover them. Speakers include Katrina vanden Heuvel, Liliana Segura, Atossa Araxia Abrahamian, Kai Wright, Dave Zirin, Elie Mystal, Lizzy Ratner, Jimmy Tobias and Michelle Chen, among many others.
The conference is free for all accepted applicants. It takes place at The New School, founded in 1919 to advance academic freedom, tolerance, and experimentation. A century later, The New School remains at the forefront of innovation in higher education, inspiring more than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students to challenge the status quo in design and the social sciences, liberal arts, management, the arts, and media.
The day will feature workshops, panel discussions, breakout sessions, a film screening of Barbara Kopple’s documentary Hot Type, and a reception as well as breakfast and lunch. Travel grants (within the US) and free housing spots are available.

Application instructions:
In a cover letter of not-more-than 500 words, tell us where you’re from, where you go to school and what you study (if applicable), why you are interested in journalism, why you want to attend this student journalism conference and if you need a transportation grant and housing. Please include your resume and either one published piece of journalism. (A reported piece from a class is also eligible.) All material should be in Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) format. All applications will be acknowledged and considered on a rolling basis until Monday, April 21. Email applications to studentconf@thenation.com.
