This Week in Cinema Tropical, December 2-9
Cinema Tropical is thrilled to present the opening of ‘Veredas: A Generation of Brazilian Filmmakers’ in partnership with Film at Lincoln Center.
Kicking off this Friday with Gabriel Mascaro‘s Divine Love and Adirley Queirós’ Is The City Only One?, the program reflects the range of boundary-pushing Brazilian film in order to showcase work from a vast and influential generation that is indelibly leaving its mark on the local and international film circuit. Veredas highlights this cinematic new wave and presents a vision of Brazil that is at long last reflective of the country’s continental diversity.
The series runs through Wednesday, December 11 with a selection of often subversive films that challenge boundaries of genre, form, gender, class, race, identity, and even how films are distributed. Please join us on Saturday, December 7 for ‘Veredas Live’ – a conversation, free and open to the public, with Gabriel Mascaro (Divine Love), Gabriel Martins and Maurillo Martins (In the Heart of the World), and co-programmers Fabio Andrade and Mary Jane Marcasiano.
Finally, Jayro Bustamente‘s gay identity drama,
Temblores, continues in theaters this week. The film follows Pablo—a pillar of Guatemala City’s Evangelical Christian community, father, and husband—as he comes to terms with his homosexuality and risks total fallout as he reveals himself to his ultra-conservative family. The film is currently playing at the Quad Cinema.
