Professor Terri Bowles Co-hosted and Moderated Panel “A Champion of Independent Black Film: Celebrating the Legacy of Michelle Materre”

Terri Bowles, Part-time Lecturer co-hosted and moderated the panel “A Champion of Independent Black Film: Celebrating the Legacy of Michelle Materre,” at the American Black Film Festival in June in honor of our beloved New School professor and colleague. The panel, cohosted by Dr. Michele Prettyman of Fordham University, featured panelists Dr. Ayoka Chenzira of Spelman College and Dr. Josslyn Luckett of NYU, both accomplished scholars/producers/writers/directors and close associates of Professor Materre’s.

Michelle Materre, prolific film distributor, professor, curator, and fervent supporter of women and BIPOC filmmakers, passed away in March. To honor her decades as a champion of independent film and her mission to lift the voices of underrepresented people in cinema, ABFF and Daughters of Eve Media will present a roundtable discussion featuring trailblazing and renowned women filmmakers.
