CALL FOR PAPERS: New Approaches to Teaching Italian Language and Culture in The Post Pandemic World
Chair(s):
Carmela Scala (Rutgers University)
Chiara De Santi (SUNY Farmingdale State College)
The way we teach and learn has changed dramatically in the last few years; the pandemic has forced us to abandon the ‘old style’ classroom and embrace a more dynamic way of teaching to engage our students in the online world. With the COVID-19 pandemic hitting the world in the spring of 2020, as instructors, we have had to deal with a classroom that became virtual from one day to the next. Although some of us entered this new world with some experience in fully online and hybrid teaching, many others found themselves adjusting to a pedagogy that needed to be learned quickly and somehow be effective for our students. Two years later, we are still struggling with the pandemic, but we now have a better sense of online and hybrid teaching, of teaching remotely or live stream, and of engaging with the students through video, LMS, and emails. Although it is still challenging for many of us, we have also learned useful skills in the years to come, especially considering that, most likely, we will never return to the ‘previous way of teaching.’ We want to identify what was worth bringing along with our teaching after the pandemic subsided and we returned to the physical classroom. This roundtable seeks contributions about what worked well in the virtual class during the pandemic and can be carried over into the face-to-face traditional class. Also, this roundtable seeks papers that discuss new and innovative approaches to teaching Italian language and culture by transforming the online class (synchronous and asynchronous) into a collaborative space that fosters our students’ interests and facilitates learning.
