About DJ Medina (@djmedinanyc)
Born and raised in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, DJ David Medina began spinning world music at his college radio station and eventually became a professional mobile and club disc jockey. He is well known for his latin, tropical, african and world music sets. He helped put Cuban Timba music and Angolan Kizomba music on the map here in NYC.

 DJ David Medina’s former weekly dance parties were legendary! There you would hear everything from Salsa, Son, Timba, Merengue, Bachata, Kompa, Soukous, Afro Beats, Soca, Reggae, Samba, Reggaeton and other global rhythms.

He has spun at venues far and wide including Bembe, SOB’s, B.B. Kings, The MoMA, The Metropolitan Opera House, Brooklyn Museum, Cipriani’s Wall St, Lincoln Center, Bronx Museum, Le Poisson Rouge, The Maritime Hotel, and Joe’s Pub.


About the Colloquium
Organized by faculty members Sybil Cooksey and Yunior Terry, the colloquium “Música de Vaivén: The Habanera Diaspora” pairs a graduate seminar with a public event series. The colloquium is sponsored by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, and the Department of Music.
