2023 HASTAC Conference Highlights
The 2023 HASTAC Conference occured this June at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York City. The event invited people to engage with creative and design-based approaches to technology and education centered on social justice issues.
Congratulations to School of Media Studies MA students Andrea L. Fernandez, Jeff Sweeton, and Sarah Wilson, who each gave a stirring presentation at the conference. Andrea presented a pair of multi-media paintings integrating course theory and perspectives on the New School’s Part-Time Faculty strike; Jeff examined media practices in technology pedagogy and gamifying We Are Having This Conversation Now by Alex Juhasz and Theodore Kerr; and Sarah discussed interactive documentaries as a methodology for practice-based research.
In presenting, Andrea, Jeff, and Sarah drew from their learnings in Storytelling Across Media, a course taught by SMS Professor Margaret Rhee, that explores media mediums such as audio, video, electronic literature, and new platforms. Topics covered during the course include incarceration, gender inequality, racial injustice, HIV/AIDS, and other social issues as students write and create across media.
