Johann Yamin Won the 2023-24 Bishwanath and Sandhya Sinha Memorial Fellowship
Johann Yamin’s writings and research focus on emerging media, digital cultures, and histories of technology. As an MA in Media Studies student at The New School, Yamin has been examining digital culture from the contexts of Singapore and its broader region of Southeast Asia, with an emphasis on the materiality of communication infrastructures and their entanglement with colonial histories. He is also a Research Assistant with the critical new media lab, Palah 파랗 Light Lab.
During the fellowship, Yamin seeks to draw upon his interests in web-based discursive platforms, online archival, and internet art to supplement the MigrationMapping website’s diverse lines of research. This emerges from an interest in contemporary flows of migration and labor from historical and transnational perspectives.
Yamin was previously Curatorial & Research Resident at the Singapore Art Museum in 2021, and a 2020 Rapid Response for a Better Digital Future Fellow at Eyebeam, New York for co-organising the online project, Pulau Something.
We can’t wait to see the amazing things Yamin creates this year!
