Alum Safiye Şentürk’s New Film Fantasy A Gets a Mattress to Spotlight at Spectacle in Williamsburg

Alum Safiye Şentürk, MA ’14, produced and did production design for their first feature film, “Fantasy A Gets a Mattresscompleted in 2023The film has now been programmed for one week at Spectacle in Williamsburg, April 5-11.

Fantasy A Gets a Mattress is about hip hop, radical urban change, disability, the housing crisis, artistic ambition, and breaking through. The film took four years to develop, and the team considers it a time capsule of late 2010s Seattle, as 80% of the shooting locations no longer exist.

Fantasy A, the protagonist in the film and real-life autistic Seattle rapper suffers trials and tribulations from total creeps as he attempts to become a superstar. After being kicked out of his group home onto the grim summer streets, Fantasy A sets off on an odyssey to achieve fame and find a good mattress to sleep on in this ensemble comedy filmed entirely on location in Seattle.

Despite the low-budget, self-funded production, the film team has achieved regional cult status and has been highly received at festivals and independent cinemas. Festival juries have been awarded Best Narrative Feature at the Local Sightings Film Festival, Best Narrative Feature at the Seattle Black Film Festival, Best PNW Narrative Feature at the Tacoma Film Festival, Best Comedic Feature at the Silent City Film Festival, and Most Promising Filmmaker from the Spokane International Film Festival.
