Alum Shireen Khaled’s Film In the Night selected for the Beirut International Women Film Festival

Alum Shireen Khaled, MA Media Studies ’24, wrote and directed the short film “In the Night”, which was recently selected for the Beirut International Women’s Film Festival. She began work on the project in Professor Vladan Nikolic’s class, “Script to Screen,” and the crew was made up of mostly New Schoolers.

“In the Night,” starring Nicole Ansari-Cox and Jack O’Neill, was adapted from Greg Kalleres’s play “A Beautiful Spell.” Shireen Khaled directed and edited the film. Rachel Barclay (TNS alumni) and Shireen Khaled (TNS alumni) produced it, with Vladan Nikolic (Dean School of Media Studies; Professor of Media Studies & Film) as consulting producer and scriptwriter.

The film chronicles a long-married couple who, amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, realizes that they have suddenly fallen out of love and spends a night trying to fall in love again.

Beirut International Women’s Film Festival accepts Lebanese and international films, feature films, and short films in all categories. For its latest edition, BWFF received more than 1,200 submissions from more than 100 countries, and applicants varied between fresh startup filmmakers and independent professional women filmmakers.

This year’s festival lineup includes notable filmmakers and actors from the Middle East and around the world, such as Nadine Labaki, Fadi Abi Samra, Tamer Ruggli, Yousra, Cyril Aris, Diamand Bou Abboud, etc.

Khaled expressed how honored she feels to be among such esteemed artists and eagerly awaits news on its selection at other film festivals. Find out more about the film HERE.
