Professor Deirdre Boyle Participating in a Symposium on The Revolutions of Early Independent Video
Deirdre Boyle, Professor Emerita of Media Studies at The New School and author of “Subject to Change: Guerrilla Television Revisited,” will participate in a symposium presented by Media Burn, the University of Chicago’s Cinema and Media Studies Department, and Video Data Bank.
Boyle’s panel will focus the conversation on the dawn of the Portapak era, which saw a flurry of activity in New York City before spreading to San Francisco and Chicago, but also to western Ohio, upstate New York, rural Kentucky, New Orleans… all over the country, in cities and towns, at colleges and local TV stations. The panel will look at the unexpected centers of production that arose in the 1970s and the importance of these community-based organizations to the broader Guerrilla Television movement.
