Emeritus Professor Sumita S. Chakravarty Celebrates 2024 Media Studies Graduate Johann Yamin
Johann Yamin, who graduated from the Media Studies department in May 2024 and is embarking on his Ph.D. in Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University, served as a Sinha Fellow at M2Lab this past academic year.
Emeritus Professor Sumita S. Chakravarty has personally highlighted the achievements of Johann Yamin, expressing the journey in her own words.
“As such, I had a chance to work with him closely on the Media+Migration project which I supervise. The initiative, thoughtfulness, creativity, and dedication that Johann brought to the project leaves me in awe (and truly grateful as well!). Other Media Studies faculty had recommended Johann very highly, and I had the good fortune to observe his intelligence and work ethic firsthand. Thanks to his efforts, the project found new ways to function, with streamlined navigation and a revamped look online. Johann showed fantastic leadership qualities that will stand him in good stead going forward: he has a knack for addressing issues and troubleshooting, for staying grounded in a fast changing media pedagogical and technological landscape, and for taking imaginative leaps of faith in thinking outside the box. And through it all, he remains genial, polite, unassuming, and always willing to extend his help to fellow-students and peers.
As professors we rarely get a chance to celebrate individual students with the wider community, and to acknowledge how crucial they are to our own intellectual growth and sustenance. Johann is the best of the best, and I am very proud to have worked with him throughout the past year. We wish him every success in his studies and his future undertakings.”
