Kolkata-Born US Filmmaker Sriyanka Ray Wins Posthumous Emmy for Acclaimed Documentary

Sriyanka Ray, an alumna of The New School, has been posthumously awarded an Emmy for her documentary “Homeroom Dreams,” which highlights the struggles of homeless students in New York City. The film, which won in the “Education/School – Short or Long Form Content” category, explores the impact of the housing crisis on education.

Ray’s documentary offers a raw look at the barriers faced by students living in poverty, revealing the harsh realities of New York’s housing problem. This Emmy is her first independent win, following 13 prior nominations. Despite her untimely passing, Ray’s legacy endures, as “Homeroom Dreams” raises awareness and sparks conversations about homelessness and education.
