Rethinking Research Through Participatory Visual Methods
A five-day workshop at The New School for Social Research, led by the Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility, explored participatory visual methods that center migrant and refugee youth voices in research.
Attendees engaged with PhotoVoice, where participants document their experiences through photography, and video-cued ethnography, which uses video to elicit cultural reflections. These approaches challenge traditional research hierarchies by empowering participants to shape their own narratives.
“This experience made me rethink how I approach fieldwork,” shared one participant. Discussions also highlighted the ethical complexities of representation and the role of researchers as facilitators rather than observers.
As migration debates continue, these methods offer researchers tools for more inclusive, participant-driven storytelling.
