The New School Co-Hosts 70th Flaherty Seminar
The Flaherty Film Seminar is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and is a cornerstone in the world of independent non-fiction cinema. As part of this milestone, The New School will co-host the 2025 Seminar, themed Onward, offering a rare and exciting opportunity for students to take part in this historic event.
Each year, the Flaherty Fellowship brings together emerging and mid-career filmmakers, curators, archivists, media professionals, and activists in an immersive environment to explore the ethical, artistic, and community-driven dimensions of cinema. Up to five New School students will be selected to join this year’s cohort of Fellows for a powerful week of screenings, dialogue, and collaboration.
Running from Wednesday, June 25 to Sunday, June 29, the Fellowship includes a full schedule of curated screenings and in-depth discussions, all in a residential setting that promotes connection and collective inquiry. Fellows will live, dine, and think together—forming bonds that often extend far beyond the Seminar.
Whether you’re a filmmaker, media thinker, or engaged storyteller, the Flaherty Fellowship is a profound opportunity to grow your practice, challenge your perspectives, and contribute to the future of nonfiction cinema.
