Hanoi University Marks 18 Years of Media Lab Initiative with Support from Fulbright and The New School, provided by Emeritus Professor Carol Wilder
On May 8, 2025, Hanoi University will celebrate 18 years of the Media Lab project, a milestone in an ongoing academic collaboration that began in 2007 with support from the Fulbright Program and The New School.
The Media Lab initiative was first launched as part of a Fulbright engagement to develop media studies infrastructure and international exchange in Vietnam. Over nearly two decades, the project has included four academic visits, three of which were supported by Fulbright, and several others facilitated through backing from The New School. Notably, five graduate students were funded through the support of Tim Marshall, playing an essential role in advancing the program’s educational reach.
The most recent activity under this initiative took place in October 2024, with a Fulbright Senior Specialist lecture series titled “From Aristotle to Algorithms.” This series explored the evolution of communication theory and media ethics, from classical frameworks to contemporary algorithmic systems, offering students and faculty a comprehensive lens on how media shapes society today.
Hanoi University will also inaugurate a permanent Media Resource Lab, a major step forward in institutionalizing media education within the university. Initial funding for the lab is being provided by the project’s longtime advocate and Fulbright scholar Carol Wilder, who has been instrumental in guiding the initiative from its early years.
