Online Opening: Catherine McGann/Present Yourself – Vintage Trans Drag Celeb Portraits

Unpacking photos for our next exhibition, Catherine McGann / Present Yourself / Photographs 1986-1999

While the scheduled opening tonight of Catherine McGann / Present Yourself / Photographs 1986-1999 is obviously postponed, we have added a special web page as of today where we showcase some of her incredible work.

Simply, this solo exhibition by the longtime Village Voice, Entertainment Weekly and New York Times culture and nightlife photographer Catherine McGann is too good to not share, if only partially and virtually.

Since before the days of Andy Warhol’s Factory superstars and continuing right up to the Kardashians and online influencers, people have been famous for, well, doing nothing.

On assignment and on her own, McGann captured people in a noteworthy and particular era going through the process of re-invention, self promotion and creation, people looking for fame and attention.

“To me, it’s all about how people self-present,” McGann says. “How they want the world to see them, and for others to remember, talk about and react to them.

“Also, the gender bending/fluidity of the era was revolutionary and really helped lead to the widespread acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community that exists today.”

Right on, Catherine.

So go get yourself a glass or three of wine, maybe some cheese and crackers, click here and take a sneak peek: http://artofourcentury.com

The show will be mounted when the current hellscape clears (the pictures look far better in person), and there’ll be a gala reception.

Finally, we look forward to keeping in touch virtually. Please don’t be shy to reach out to us with a question, comment, or about acquiring a vintage McGann photograph or something from one of our earlier shows. Just go to the Contact page on the web site. Or reply to this note. We will get right back to you.

Our Instagram page http://instagram.com/artofourcentury/ has proven to be a smash hit. Check that out too.

Our Facebook http://facebook.com/GreenwichVillageArt/ isn’t too shabby either.
