Can sexuality be studied in a laboratory? Psychophysiology of sexuality and recent findings on sexual health. Pablo Mangas (Visiting Scholar, University of Granada)
October 19th, 2:00 PM – 3:20 PM
Johnson/Kaplan 66 W 12th St, Room 518
Presented by The SexTech Lab in the Schools of Public Engagement, this meeting will focus on understanding how studies are conducted in a Sexuality Laboratory. First, quantitative research in sexology will be discussed, as well as its main approaches and types of research. Regarding Laboratory studies, we will give visibility to the pioneering findings of Masters & Jhonson, as well as discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these studies both in the past and in the present. Images and videos will be presented of what the Human Sexuality Laboratory of the University of Granada (LabSex UGR) is like, as well as the recording devices used, such as the penile plethysmograph and the vaginal photoplethysmograph (we will even learn how to interpret signals). Examples of some neutral and erotic fragments that we use in the LabSex UGR for this type of studies, the psychosexological assessment instruments that we use with our participants, as well as the process by which they come to the Laboratory and all the instructions they receive will be presented. Finally, we will also mention the active lines of research underway at LabSex UGR and the main sexual health findings we are discovering in the LGBTIQA+ population.
