Sapan is best known for his work as CEO of AMC Networks. He transformed American Movie Classics — a TV service for old movies — into a major business and cultural force by championing genre-defining hits, including The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and Mad Men, as well as innovative channels, including IFC, Sundance Channel, and WE tv.

Sapan also helped to popularize independent cinema at the production and distribution company IFC Films, was named one of Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business, and was inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame and Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame.
A New School trustee and early supporter of the Media Management program, Sapan is a true original: a published poet, author, civil rights activist, and a former labor organizer and actor. His latest book, Third Act: Reinventing Your Next Chapter, explored ways extraordinary people — including Gloria Steinem, Rep.James Clyburn, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, Robert Redford, Norman Lear and Alan Alda — refashioned themselves when they hit what’s often thought of as retirement age.
