Student Chatwan Mongkol Explores What Happens in 2023 Elections Beyond ‘Key’ States like Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky

In “The Nutgraf” newsletter, Media Management student Chatwan Mongkol went through local news sites in every state and compiled a list of what was at stake in communities nationwide during the 2023 elections — beyond states you’ve seen in the national headlines like Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky.

While national politics often dominates the news cycle, local off-cycle elections, which usually yield low turnouts, can significantly impact people’s day-to-day lives in ways that national elections don’t.

Here are some highlights: Voters in an Idaho town voted to allow alcohol sales for the first time in nearly eight decades. A Montana town banned recreational marijuana after 36 voters cast their ballots. Seattle is set to allot almost $1 billion for an affordable housing program.
